Impressed with my DeWalt 735 Planer

Received my DeWalt 735 Planer a few days ago. It was a little heavier than I had imagined it might be. The first thing to impress me was the fact that it was, not only packed well for protection during shipping, the packing came apart with such ease. My hat comes off to the person who designed the packing, for he/she most assuredly hates unpacking things as much as I do. It always seems like you need three hands and an overhead winch to extract machinery from a box, but not this thing. It was a breeze. Next on my list of ???impress me if you can?? was in discovering everything that was supposed to be there was there. So far, I??¦m off to a great start here. Once I get it out of the box I sat down and read thru the owner??¦s manual, which was short, and to the point. I found it easily understandable and complete. Now to test it. After attaching it to my vacuum system and plugging it into an electrical outlet I grabbed a scarp piece of 3/4 inch stock, set the depth to 1/32, set it on slow speed and ran it thru. I??¦d never used a planer before so I was a little surprised at the noise level, but since I wear ear protection it wasn??¦t bad at all. The piece of stock came out the other end and was absolutely beautiful. Smooth as a baby??¦s bottom. I ran it thru again and again until I got it down to a 1/2 inch, alternating sides with each pass and ended up with a perfect piece of lumber I??¦d be proud to use on any project. With all the confidence in the world at that point I stuck a 12?? x 6??¦ board in it and let it rip, flipped it over and did the other side, and ended up with another perfectly smooth piece of wood. What impressed me the most was that it came ready to use. Even though I checked everything, according to the manual, I found that I didn??¦t need to adjust anything. It came ready to use right out of the box. Kudos to DeWalt, you really made my day. Well there isn??¦t much else can I say, except, I love it! So, if you??¦re looking for a portable plane...

A Gem for Serious Woodworkers

If your not happy working only with stock thickness wood, a good planer is the answer. And the DeWalt 735 has captured the lead in top spot for wood working professionals and advanced amateurs alike. But it needs a a few additions . . . like a 4" dust and chip[ vacuum system (a must). A moveable cart is handy as well. Once all is set p, hitting plus/minus .005" thickness targets becomes routine (don't forget a good micrometer). The secret of success is to go slow. Creep up to targets in 0.030" increments (about 1/32") The 735's crank thickness adjustment is incredibly accurate and easy to use.
